Should I Buy a Gasoline or Diesel Truck?

The age old question when looking to buy a new truck is whether to choose a gasoline powered truck or diesel powered truck. The answer isn't a simple which one is better, however, and it really comes down to your preference and needs. Years ago, drivers would tell you diesel trucks had the advantage because of increased fuel economy, price of diesel fuel, and power. But today, with the onset of direct injection and turbocharged gas engines, along with the inflated price of diesel fuel thanks to the refining process, the margin has been narrowed down to solely what you prefer. To make your decision easier on you, we're going to examine a couple areas to consider when choosing whether a diesel or gasoline powered truck is the right fit for you!

Gasoline vs. Diesel: Fuel Economy

Where once before diesel trucks offered much better fuel economy than gasoline powered trucks, that gap has nearly disappeared altogether. With the advancement in gasoline engines, including factors like turbocharging, direct injection, variable valve timing, and more, both gasoline and diesel engines offer largely comparable estimated fuel economy ratings. It also used to be the case that diesel fuel cost less than gasoline, but with new environmental standards and the price of refining diesel fuel going up, the two fuels are also comparable in price.

Gasoline vs. Diesel: Power

It's really dependent on which truck you're choosing in terms of which is going to offer more power. Gasoline engines can offer more horsepower at times, but that doesn't necessarily transfer to ability. Diesel engines often offer more torque and better towing ability, especially during long distance hauls. Gasoline engines, on the other hand, are better suited for shorter commutes, say to and from work every day, while hauling a trailer.
